More Foreigners Learn Portuguese!

This is an article originally published in the Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo, on Sept 16th 2011.

The article tells about the rise in the number of foreigners learning Portuguese language in Brazil and abroad due to Brazil's financial profile and status abroad and the flood of international companies landing in its shores in the past years.

"While Europeans and Americans face high unemployment and risk of recession, Brazil became the `place to be` - and the Portuguese language has become increasingly pop."

The Italian student Luisa Fantini, 23, arrived a little less than a year ago in Brasilia accompanied by her Brazilian boyfriend, whom she met in Madrid, and Luisa says she wants to go back to school soon - `I will take the exam later this month." , referring to a National Portuguese Language Exam - Celpe-Bras, proficiency level and mandatory for people who need to prove their skills in Portuguese language within the national territory.

As a way to understand the rules of the Portuguese grammar and the language as whole, students and foreign executives have been filling in the classrooms of language schools.

The "boom" of foreigners enrolling in  Portuguese courses abroad is also noticeable. The number of members of cultural centres funded by the Brazilian Foreign Ministry across many countries rose from 17,500 in 2004 to 31,700 centres last year.
