47 Years without Cecília Meireles

On November 9th 1964, Brazil lost one of the major lyric voices of  Portuguese language literature.

Cecilia Meireles  was a renowned poet, painter, teacher and journalist in Brazil.
Orphaned at an early age, Cecilia was raised by her Portuguese grandmother, D. Jacinta Garcia Benevides.
At the age of nine, she began writing poetry and attended the "Escola Normal"  in Rio de Janeiro, between the 1913 and 1916.
As a teacher, she studied languages, literature, music, folklore and educational theory.

In 1919,at the age of 18, Cecilia Meireles published her first book of poetry, Spectrum, a set of symbolist sonnets .
Although she lived under the influence of Modernism, she also presented in her book, symbolism and techniques from Classicism tradition, Gongora, Romanticism, Parnassianism, Realism and Surrealism, which is why her poetry is considered timeless.

She has also had an important role as a journalist, with publications about daily problems in education and she founded, in 1934, the first children's library in Brazil.
